The Holbrook prospect consists of several molybdenum prospects within the Koetong Granite. The Holbrook deposits were mined around the turn of the century, but production records are scant. Previous exploration has indicated the main zone of mineralization covers 3,500 square meters at grades of 0.1 to 0.2% Mo. Only shallow drilling has been undertaken with significant results ranging from 15m at 0.4% Mo to 1.1% Mo over 1.7m. Molybdenite (accompanied by minor cassiterite and chalcopyrite, together with traces of bismuth and tungsten minerals) occurs in the Koetong Granite in quartz veins and as disseminations in microgranite, aplitic granite, and adamellite.
Austin-Anderson (Aust.) Pty Ltd (1970) estimated that reserves of 500,000 t of 0.1% molybdenum, to a depth of 46 m, could be present at the quarry prospect.
The Holbrook molybdenum deposit is approximately 290 km southeast of Tara, and the Ardlethan tin deposit is approximately 145 km southeast of Tara. The unicorn Mo deposit in Victoria is located ~100km south of Holbrook. The Holbrook deposit has most affinity with the Unicorn deposit; the two deposits are at the southern end of the Wagga tin province.
